I have 12 month old lad who just wants to eat everything, i know that this a lab thing but training is progressing well and i have tried to introduce cold game
ie rabbits. the problem being that she will lick the rabbit and start to eat it. I am cautious not not shout at her as i dont want to put her off but dont know
how to move on with this, am i trying this too soon and would i be better off leaving this for now and hope that when she is older she will retrieve instaed of
eating??

I dont know how 'old' the cold game is you are using'.nor the condition it is in?,so I will assume these factors are ok?
I would use a 'rabbit skin dummy',until the dog has been 'accustomed', to the feel and texture, and satisfied that the 'progression from 'canvass', to fur,has been resolved, before attemting cold game. |

thanks for the reply, the rabbit was a freshly shot one, I had been out and got a few bunnies for tea and i thought that i would leave one on the track. I went
home and got the pup out for a run and sent her for a blind. She has had dummies covered with rabbit skin and some with a few feathers held on by elastic bands
and these have never been a problem. Because she went to eat the bunny i thought that i would end on a good note and gave her a rabbit skin dummy retreive so
as not to let my previous growling at her put her off retreiving, she went straight out and picked the dummy up and brought it back to me no problem.
just dont know what to do for the best regards |

So ,if you are satisfied that the 'transition', from canvass and fur/feather is solid, but the 'issue' is on cold game?, then it sounds like
,the 'pick-up', and recall should be addressed??
Re-inforce the 'recall', at the point/time the dog has 'picked' the target!, If the dog is 'investigating',at the 'pick up point'? then ,concentrate on this issue only? Toss the cold game a short distance, just as you did(I assume) when in puppy play with a dummy?,forget about steadines,or marking, just get the dog interested in the object?,make it so easy, that it has nothing else to do but 'get it'? then reinforce the 'recall', at a short distance that you can control! Hope that makes sense? |
