hey I got a 16 week gsp male. i got him at 14 weeks and he was doing real well for those 2 weeks responding to my commands when i was working with him. seems
the past 2 days he has been ignoring me, i dont ask him to come unless i reinforce it, but i could always get him to come either by turning around and walking
the other way or stooping down. NOT ANY MORE, this dog wants to take off. i always have him a CC accept for when i let him out to potty. now he doesnt wanna
potty just wants to take off. then when im able to get him back in he manages to pee inside. oh ya and he pooped in his kennel twice last night. im a police
officer and working midnite right now so im fortunate to be able to come home and let him out...he is usually waiting to go potty when i stop home. not last
night! he pooped within 4 hrs of me leaving, then i cleaned him and kennel up and put him back in....come back 4 hours later and he pooped again!!!!! any
ideas...suggestions?? im at my witts end and going insane

Conventional wisdom is that a dog the age of yours needs fed at lest four times a day but you have a problem to resolve and must do is a great master. In the
first instance I would alter the dog's regime so that it isn't fed any later than four hours before you have to close the dog up. Then always make sure
the dog has an opportunity to void before you close it up. There is always the possibility that if you have changed the pup's food it may need to void
because it isn't in control of its bowels. I would change the dog to tripe, right away, to at least make the accidents easier to clean up but you could
experiment with various foods to find one that suits the dog. You have to be careful here because frequent cahnges of food could worsen the situation.

Coda, from watching this site and others, i have learned that your pup is in training at all times. With this in mind, always have control of your pup. Do not
let the pup run loose. You control the timing of he pups discharge. Sure right!!! Keep in mind that the pups digestive system is not the same as ours. One of
the tricks is to feed often 3to4 time a day. Keep the pup in a small crate and let the pup out (under control) to potty. If the pup does not put back in crate.
1hr later try again. Donot let the pup have its way, you are in control. That includes when it potties or shakes water off itself.
Good luck and have fun Jim Schaefer (not a dog trainer, but have fun with dogs) |

...Sounds like you are one fed up guy.
As far as training goes, you can't expect a lot of focus at this age....and when he gets to be about 6 months, he will be an adolescent and probably try to stretch the envelope just like a human 12 yr. old. lol A lot of what you think that you've taught him will seem to go up in smoke and there will be a lot of 1 step forward...two steps back, type of thing. He's not going to be a solid citizen until he's about 18 months - 2 years. You have to make him think that you are the greatest thing in his world. If you are training too hard, you might be already shutting him down and he may be tuning you out. Recall? Even when you are in the house, put him down the hall and call his name and make a big deal of him following you. Pups that age need a solid routine and RULES. You need consistency and patience above all. If you are getting angry and punishing him, he might be thinking, "Why would I want to be with this person?" What do you do to get this dog's energy expended? Do you walk him? Let him run like crazy in an enclosed area? Feed him at the same time every day and pull the food if it isn't eaten in 20 minutes. A puppy that is 4 months old doesn't need to be fed 4 times a day. Make sure the crate is small enough so that he can't poop in one corner and sit in the other. When the puppy is in the house and it isn't in a crate or under your constant supervision, tie it to your belt loop with a line so that it can't find a hiding place to pee or take a dump. When it goes outside, praise the puppy and let it know that it's doing the right thing. .....patience, patience, patience.....consistency, consistency, consistency. |

thanks for all the replies everyone, i have been patient with him and he is coming back around. he is still urinating in his crate when i put him in there to
go somewhere, but i think his crate is too big so im going to make it smaller for him. i take him for walks twice a day, and i usually take him to the river
and let him run and swim

Sounds like you are on the right track. Try to find things that he is doing right to praise in order to build a good relationship and get him wanting to please
you and learn! I think that he'll be fine. You can put an appropriately sized box in his crate to take up space. Then when he's reliable, you can start
thinking about his comfort.
