I have a 8 month old Lab that spits the dummy out when he returns to me with the retrieve. I havent ever tugged with him or anything like that, he just returns and spits it out. Any advice would be greatly recieved.
many thanks, Neil

Hi Neil,
You need to teach the dogs the dog to hold onto the dummy!!!.There are a couple of ways to tackle this issue. As the dog approaches with the retrieve walk away from him in the opposite and allow him to carry the dummy.Build up is confidence and give lots of praise while he is carrying the dummy. You could try different objects to retrieve this sometimes helps. You can also back train the retrieve, begin with the sit and hold. But be very careful not to nip the dogs gums.place a small puppy dummy in his mouth and give the command "hold".build up very slowly,1second,2 seconds etc start at the dogs level.once he is happy holding the dummy, try crouching then progress to standing upright while he holds the retrieve. If that fails clicker training may well be the solution.you can shape the behaviour this way but you need to see a proffesional. Where in the country do you live? I maybe able to help! Hi Steve,
Thankyou ever so much for your reply. Im in Bedfordshire, but very willing to travel!!! Im sure you can appreciate how frustrating it is when you cant get one thing right, all his other training is going so well, he will stop everytime, stays when asked to, I can give him directions, he swims lovely and his actual retrieve is fantastic, its just the delivery that is appalling! He does occasionally run past me but i have managed to put that to bed at the moment by standing against a fence so that he cant. Not sure if this is the correct method or not but it seems to work. Im just so desperate to have a lovely clean smooth delivery. Your help would be greatly appreciated!! Many thanks Neil. |

Hi Neil,
You mentioned that the dog was happy to hold on to a pigeon.Try rubbing the pigeon scent on the dummy, it may help! Regards Steve |
