Problems with dogs name-- |
Lead | |
|
Always try to pick names that are short-easy to understand and do not conflict with commands- -well I goofed this time-- was going to call newest pup Zeke but
changed to Jake-- great til we got to water work and started teaching Shake- having some issues with him thinking I am calling him to l the line again--going
to take a bit of time--always some problem comes up that you missed.

Coot, over here it will come as news to 99 of 100 that US dogs are taught/train to shake (shed water) on command. The similarities between your dog's name
and the "shake" command oughtn't pose any real conflict--if you understand that most US retrievers are "self-taught" to shake on
command, that is, in the act of shaking the water from their coat, "shake" is verbally overlaid. Thus the dogs are already shaking out water when the
action is married to the command. In your case, all you need do is twitch your hand from one side to the other to emulate a "shaking" retriever, and
the dog soon will suss that mnemonic and shake upon seeing it. You really don't have to retrain, or rename, anything.

I used body language-it worked- might have made Amish guys fishing think I was nuts but that's no biggie.

This post had me laughing. Years ago it was pointed out to me that I was in the habit of shaking my backside as a cue to my wet labs that they could now
shake.I hadn't realised that I had developed that habit !

LOL!!!!!!!!
On a more serious note, remember that a dog only understands a word through association, they dont speak english. So what ever words/sounds you use does not matter. You could use "sit" for a recall if you really wanted and "get back" as apposed to "sit" Its only coz we understand the words that we use them! Sounds like you have got it sorted anyway! Good luck and keep shaking!!!! |

Almost done having to shake MY booty--yesterday took young dog to River(Mississippi) and started him through dekes-using pistol launcher which is good to 60-70
yds- he didi fine and reyutrned ok -held bumper and shook AFTER delivery-not 100% yet but good- folks fishing along river just shook their heads--guess i first
woke them up with gun report- then gave them a 30 min dance-show.
