There are two types of dogs that won't give up their retrieve. The ones that can't give it to you because they have already spat it out or the type that will head back towards you but won't either come right to you or will come right up to you but won't let it go. Yours is obviously the latter. This has to be done carefully because you can easily turn the latter into the former but I just walk away. I don't say a word and I don't make a fuss and what you musn't do at all costs is turn this into a tug of war should the dog eventually come right up close. And don't be tempted to snatch the dummy either. I have found that most non compliant dogs treated this way become nearly desperate to get rid of the dummy after a time and will be only too glad to come to you to get rid of it. If you really go to town with the praise the first time it goes right the job is usually done there and then. After that I try to get the delivery to become part of a routine.
Sit - throw - shot - send - give/take - sit at heel - release - praise.
