What he can do.
1) He will sit on command to do so
2) He will walk to heel on the lead or off the lead-excellent in this respect although i am concerned that he wishes to stick to me like glue when i need him out front on occasion in the future. This links me to the next point
3) He will do an open retrieve in the garden 25 yards or in the house 20 yards on command. He will happily stay put when i walk away 10 feet before commanded to get on and seek out the dummy..He is reluctant to get on unless he knows exactly where the dummy is.Hidden dummys prompt him to come back to me to seek my help in walking towards the hidden dummy.
4)A kiddy cap pistol was tried out on throwing the dummy as a starter before going onto blanks and i predict that as he was unconcerned by this in any negative manner, and given his parentage that he will be unlikely to be gun shy if he is introduced to it gradually.
All in all he is a willing, friendly and typically mischievous lab pup.But he does bark at other dogs with his back up and at people he sees through the fence in the garden.Hopefully this is a puppy territory thing and he will grow out of it as he gets more socialisation.
I hope to start with a whistle soon as i tried a recall on him when he was barking at a person outside the garden--he came right back into the kitchen in an instant. He is at present leaving deposits in the living room every morning.I intend giving him his his 2nd feed earlier on to try and stop this but since he has only been with me 6 days it is too early to tell if this is just nerves etc.
Any advice on what the next phases should be for a lab??--i am in no rush to produce a fowling dog in 6 months but i do want to build on what he has picked up on already given he is so damned quick to learn.
Allen.
