It's been a while since I posted but I still read now and again. Life has just been busy the last couple of years. Some of you may remember the picture of a little chocolate Lab pup I posted a while ago. Well, she's 3 years old now and I'm looking for a chocolate stud. My Bonnie girl is a nice 55 lb Lab with UK ancestry, a great nose, great temperament and a excellent bird sense. I use her almost exclusively for rough shooting pheasant. She's a wonderful family Lab as well as a fine field Lab. I'm looking for a smallish chocolate male with similar characteristics, particularly one with UK ancestry to use as her stud. Wildrose Kennels here in the states imports UK labs and they offer this FTAW Colonel Nut of Grangemead at stud. This dog was imported into the US in 2003. Part of their blurb on this dog is: Bruce is the only British Field Trial Award winning chocolate labrador ever to have been exported from the United Kingdom Has anyone ever seen him work? His lineage is Grangemead Woodlark X Tonybee Spring Time. Any thoughts?

I didn't know that there had ever been a chocolate lab that won a FT Award in the UK. I wonder why he got exported as I am sure that there would have been a good market for chocolate labs with FT awards in the pedigree over here.

Jeff, I'd love to have a chance to correspond with Tom West about Bruce. I just really need to ask a simple question: Would Tom use Bruce as a stud on a good chocolate lab? I think if the answer is yes, that would be all I need. A question for either or both of you, since I am not that familar with UK awards. I understand FTW and FTCH but just what significance does FTAW carry? Is this sort of a "second place" acknowledgement? I should have recognized Grangemead; a while ago our mutual friend Wendy contacted MS. Walls-Duffin and got permission for me to call her directly. I was looking for a mature UK chocolate beech at the time (love the profanity filter!) and Wendy suggested Grangemead. I came away with the distinct impression from both ladies that if one were looking for field line chocolates in the UK, Grangemead was one of the few sources. I am 90% ready to contact Bruce's owner and arrange an assignation for Bonnie. If Tom West gives him the thumbs up, I believe my search is over. Thank you both for your help.

Is there a maximum number of awards that can be given by the judges or can they award as many as they think are merited by the performances of the dogs?

There are also CoM's (Certificate of Merit), which are not normally referred to as 'awards' in the same sense. It is entirely at the judges discretion as to how many and what awards are given. Jeff

In further study, though, I see that the kennel that has Bruce does not specifically offer stud service and has limited registration for its pups. It may be that they are of the type that would rather try to maximize their profits by eliminating any competition rather than making good genetics more available. Still, I have a mutual friend and maybe I can work something out. On the FTAW, it would probably be safe to say then that at at least one trial Bruce performed in a very worthy manner. I will check it out. It's difficult to find a reasonably sized chocolate over here with demonstrated field capability and excellent temperament. Tossing in some good looks makes the recipe even more difficult to assemble.

I don't know how familiar you are with the UK FT's. but they are run on a shooting day where wild game is shot, the dogs have to perform the usual tasks of a retriever as they do on any other shooting day, but to a much higher standard, the smallest fault can result in elimination. Temperament will be excellent as it is the first requirement of a UK retriever. it is rare to find a working bred lab, of any colour, with a poor temperament. I'm sure Tom will give you all the reassuring information you want, he is a professional gundog trainer and successful field trialer of many years. Regards Jeff
