Here is a post from Alistair about his 16 month old lab - the replies are some advice from our retriever experts
Alistair's post
I would appreciate your input on my lab, Mackie's training. He is 16 Months old and is my first gundog. I have been training him since 6 months, but am struggling. He does know the basics but sometimes ignores me completely.
As per a previous thread, I have begun again, right from the beginning. I have been using Eric's Broadsheets. I am still reinforcing the recall and sit comands, as I want these to be 100% before continuing. I was having problems keeping him interested, so have tried to make it as fun as possible for both of us.
Currently I am training him twice a day, which goes as follows. We go for a walk, him on a 8-9m check lead which I keep a hold of. I walk him to heel for the first section, then encourage him to hunt around without ever getting to the end of the lead. Whilst he is hunting I alternate between remote stop/sit and recall, mixing in sit and stay, sit then recall, sit then hunt again. I then continue with some heel work on the way home again.
I am making real progress with the sit and stay, and recall. the heel work is taking longer as he always wants to be abount a foot in front of me. I am working as on another thread by turning into and away from him when he strays too far ahead.
Does anyone see any problems with this line of training, and does anyone have any input as to what I should do next? As I said this is my first Gundog and any help would be appreciated
