And would the poster have gone by the name PT Barnum or Bobby the Bloated Maxwell Jr.? The "type"'s authenticity being right there alongside silver Labs, white Labs, miniature Labs, Gentleman's Gundog (tm) Labs, etc. and my favorite of them, albeit a cross, the Bullador www.jimtownkennels.com/Bu...ladors.htm , soon to become "national" mascot for the newly recognized Duchy of Pimlico...

Mike,
The Bullador..now I've seen it all. Horrid looking things. I have a large quantity of sand left over from our building operations. Do you think this fellow could sell it for me ... to Arabia say? Eug |

Eug, this has trade mission written all over it--you partner with this Bullador breeder from Iowa in establishing the "official patrol dog" for Loch Ness, and your leftover sand is strewn to become the newly anointed Ness strand serving as breed headquarters.
Yup, horrid things but no worse than the all-American bent for "designer" breeds, a k a puggles (beagle x pug) et al. MG |

Yep - Springador, Labradoodle, Chesapeake Bay Retriever. We should never have deviated from Flatcoats.

"Yep - Springador, Labradoodle, Chesapeake Bay Retriever. We should never have deviated from Flatcoats." Eric, I agree that the aforementioned 'breeds' are ridiculous. But I have great respect or Chesapeakes. The ones I have hunted with were true, hardcore waterfowl dogs with strength and endurance that would not quit. One of the few breeds developed in America, they go back to the 1800's market hunters. Unfortunately, flatcoats are a rare breed in North America. |

As a flatcoat owner, I think it's the flatcoat that is the deviant!
Devils in black with a leg in each corner, if you ask me! But still the best! Debs x |

Eric, You`re so right about Chessies. If it makes it into print you should see mine in next weeks Shooting Times. When the reporter asked what my dogs name was, I said everybody calls her "Psycho `Lil", but i think they`ve printed her correct name, albiet the ever so inappropriate, "Willow," which conjures up all manner of slim and feminine images. Which she certainly ain`t. Nick. |

Nick, you know of course Eric's taking the p*ss (if he weren't I'd export a Boykin to bite him on the leg), but for those of us who can't glom onto ST, tell a little about your Chessie. Coastal fowling, inland, or both? Trial dog? Are there even a wee number of the latter throughout the UK?

mg, Thank you for asking. She`s now about six years old and I use her for everything. Easy to train, she`s an absolute pleasure to shoot with. I used to be heavily involved with the breed but I`ve long since lost contact with the UK breed club so I can`t state exactly how many there are over here, probably in the high hundreds/low thousand. A few Chessies are trialed, some with reasonable success, but it has never interested me personally. Good with other dogs and does`nt fight.(I actually don`t know any that do.I think thats just part of their reputation.) She is a very good judge of character and is friendly to people she likes although she can be very offhand with people she ain`t too keen on. She has a strongly developed guarding instinct which some people find intimidating. Over the last 30 years I have alternated between a Chessie and a Flatcoat so I`ll be looking for a Flattie in a couple of years. Nick. |
