Bear is back in training |
Lead | |
|
Hello all, after a 3 month break in traing Bear {15 months old} he is back in traning. I had my total knee replacement and am now ready for the Beast. I took him out to day and much to my surprise it was like we never stopped. We worked for about 45mins and he wanted more. When we got back to the house, I let him have his play time. I was sitting in the front yard and he was sitting beside me. He looked up and saw a dove sitting on the power wire. He would look at me and then look at the dove. I told him to check it out and he went over to the dove and sit below it looking at it and looking at me. Sure was a joy to see him so excited about hunting.

This is a picture of where I train Bear. As you can see there are 6 different ponds to use. The ponds cover a 50 acre area. It is an old sand pit. The water is ground water and is clean and safe. Jim Schaefer |

Jim,
What a great place for your water training, I am sure many US trainers who have spent $ooo's creating their technical ponds would be envious. Jeff |

Jeff here are two more areas. One is the Rio Grande River and flows at about 10miles per hour. Left side is US and the right is mexico. This is good for the moving water retreives.
The pic with weeds is a sand pit with lots of little islands with weeds on them. We use this one for bogs with more experance. They can not see bird/dummy hit ground. i68.photobucket.com/album...P_1796.jpg i68.photobucket.com/album...e415ca.jpg Jim Schaefer Ps all of the site with in 1/2 mile of my house. We use a 5,000 acre farm for dove and quail and pigeon shooting. The farm has grass areas all over the place |

Jim,
Great training/shooting areas, you are very lucky to have those facilities so close to your home, do you train on your own or with a bunch of others? Jeff |

Jeff, I train with 2 pros and 5 like my self who just hunt.
We work the dogs year round. In Dec it is not unusal to have 90F weather. We have winter 3 weeks in Jan. It will get in the high 40F. During duck season we hunt the Gulf of Mexico, close to land. Jim Schaefer |

Took Bear out to day and started to have a problem with his deleivery. He would reteive the dummy and about 3 feet from me would drop the dummy. He would shake the water off and would not pick it backup and deliever to me. I tried to backup from him and he would hold it till he got about 3 feet then he would drop it and shake. I then tried him on land no problem.
So it happened only in water. Ok I know I can depend on you good people. Jim Schaefer |

Re: Bear is back in training

Jim,
If this is always at the 3 feet distance and only when wet then it may have been caused by your own body language when he has got close to you and shakes after a swim, ie if you have moved away when he shakes. To remedy this I think you should reinforce the 'hold' command, ensure he will hold on to the dummy until you give him a release command. I addition to this I would start by going right to the waters edge to take the delivery, even stand in the water if possible, then slowly work back and build up the distance. If he does look as if he is going to shake get his attention and encourage him in to you. Any time he drops the dummy, place it back in his mouth and call him in, ensuring he gets lots of praise for the correct delivery. You can put the 'shake' on command but I would persevere with the above first, it is just a question of showing Bear what it is you want then repeating and building very slowly until he understands. Re: Bear is back in training

Well took Bear out to work in water. Used a hand launch with med load, really went a lot higher and very long way out. Bear went down 12 ft drop across 20 ft road and down a4ft drop to water. He returned to my hand. We spent over an hour on blind retrieves. Very few problems. The last retrieve he took dummy and jumped in kennel in back of the truck. I guess he was tired. He did stick his head out and give me the dummy.
When we got back home he wanted to work so more. Jim sCHAEFER |

Hello all, took the bear out and worked him in tall grass. I was using a dead pigion. He was able to find all 8 retrieves. We then went to the Rio Grande River. The river was moving fast. He would flow down river for 50 yards. He was funny, he had a hard time getting back to me. In this case would it be ok to run the bank??? If I were duck hunting I would say ok. What do you think???
Jim Schaefer PS One of the guys I train with won 4th with his dog in a FT. There were 75 dogs. |

Re: Bear is back in training

Jim,
If this was Bear's first time across a fast flowing river the whole situation may have confused him, he may even have been a little frightened to be swimming hard and actually being taken downstream. This sometimes it makes a dog hesitant in getting back into the river, he knows where he want to get to be cannot work out how to do it. For me, I would certainly not be concerned at a bit of bank running, with experience and a lot of encouragment he will return without thinking about it. Jeff PS. Well done to your friend, not easy I would guess. |

Re: Bear is back in training

Jeff, it was Bears 1st time in the river and the dummy was almost on the other side.
I have been working Bear on the clock drills, dummies at 12/3/6/9 with duck decoys in between. He did a lot better than I would have guessed. He was having a good time doing this. It was his first time for decoys. When I worked him in water there are real ducks to distract him. In the clock drill I also put whit bags out also. This did confuse him. I use black and white dummys. He soon learned to tell the difference. I have been working him for two days on this. I will be taking the decoys out to the water area, to see what he will do. Good luck and thanks for everyones help!! Jim Schaefer |

Re: Bear is back in training

I have been working Bear in fields with feeding doves. I have been using pigeons for him to retrive. He has been working like a pro. There were some ducks in the field that gave him fits. He was not sure what to do at times. Pickup the dead pigeon or go for the ducks. Luckly he choose the right one. The pigeon was given to me at the left side in the sit position. When walking the fields he has the the field work down ok. He is 30yards in front and ranges from left to right about 15 yards of center. I have found he is weak in the field in the sit position and walk away. He will let me get about 20 yards away before he breaks and runs to me. I will work more in the field with this. I use a screwdown stake that will hold my long line this will hold him in place. Any suggestion???
He gave me a problem today loading up. This is the command to jump into the back of the truck. The tail gate is about 4feet high. I waited for 15min to get him to load, no luck. I got into the truck and drove for 1/4 mile and stopped. I agained asked him to load. He wanted me to pick him up like I did when he was a puppy. Again after 15min he would not load. So again I got back into truck and drove 1/2 mile more. This time he jumped to truck with just one command. He also loaded into crate with out telling him to. I was concerned about it being too hot for him, it was 101F degrees today. When we trained it was 94Fdegrees. It was 6pm. I always carry 30gallons of water for him. Jim Schaefer |

Re: Bear is back in training

I have been taking Bear out to work in grain stuble. There are lots of morning dove in these field. It is driving him crazy. The dove scent was every where. He did something he had not done in a long time. He took off on his own. He would not respond to my whistle, or me calling him back. I walked back to the truck and he returned to me. So I put him on a long line (100ft) and started working him again. So I started with whistle signals. We went through this to reforce the comands.
After 3hours of different traing modes. He was ready for more but called it quites. Jim Schaefer |

Re: Bear is back in training

Bear and I have had some very good traning days. Saturday we had a training day at the water pit. Paul and Chris the two pros and 3 others were working thier dogs. Chris has a dog he recieved from Min. and he is really great. The run he set up for him was hard. If you look at a clock the 390yard was at 12oclock the 150yard was 2oclock and the 60 yard was10oclock. The order was just that. The first dummy was 12oclock next was the 2oclock the the 9oclock. The dog was sent for the 60yard, then the 150yard and then the 390yard. The 60 yard was in water for that distance. He was then sent to the 150yard. It was water land water land. The 390 yard was next, it was water land water land water land. Needless to say that dog was tired, That was 600yards with out a rest. He did it with out a misstake. The dog is 1 and 1/2 years old. Chris will be taking the dog to Cananda for open field trails this summer. He is taking 6 dogs to work.
Bear has a long way to go to match this dog. But we keep trying. Jim Schaefer |

Re: Bear is back in training

Hello All, I was working Bear on fetching a dead pigeon. He was doing very well. The problem that I had was, when he returned with the bird i would praise him and say hold, which he did. When he came to my left side and set down I told him to release and I touched the bird. He growled at me!!! I have noticed that lately he has not been himself. When I go to get him from his kennel he does not wag his tale. He does show signes of being happy when we go to train.
Ok what is wrong?????? Thanks Jim Schaefer |

Re: Bear is back in training

Jim,
Firstly you need to ensure nothing is wrong with him, a sudden change in demeanour accompanied by growling may be an indication that all in not well with him, you may like to consider a check up at the vets. You also must be sure you are not putting too much pressure on him. If he enjoys the training he should not show signs of being unhappy to come out of his kennel, this would be totally uncharacteristic of a dog enjoying his training. Assuming he in not in any pain etc., the growling may be indicative of resource guarding, can you take his food away when he is eating, will he allow you to take anything from him without a problem. Also bearing in mind he is approaching maturity and may be having some thoughts on independence. If the problem is the first signs of possessive aggression (resource guarding), then immediate steps should be taken to prevent it's escalation. Do not attempt to be aggressive against him (such as the alpha rolling crap to show him who is boss etc.), as this will almost certainly aggravate the situation into some kind of confrontation rapidly, your efforts have to be to keep him on side. A dead pigeon is probably to him, a much higher value than a dummy/bumper so you will need to re-educate him as to who owns what. This I would do at home practising the hold and release, graduate from bumpers through bumpers with pigeon wings attached to pigeons. At the first sign of reluctance to release offer him some high value reward, slice of hot dog or something similar. If this works practice over and over until it becomes the norm, then move on to very short retrieves, just a few yards. The idea is to get him to understand that something better is on offer for the correct behaviour, fair exchange etc. Eventually you will phase out the rewards as the release of the bird becomes habitualised. If you go down this road, and it works, remain alert to any return the inappropriate behaviour in the future, resource guarding can be very serious so don't leave it to sort itself out. I may be totally wrong, I hope I am, but whatever let me know how it works out. Jeff |

Re: Bear is back in training

Bear and I went to the water training location. I had two goals in mind, one to expose Bear to adult male dogs and the other not to let him train in water. He spent 2 hours on a lead at my side. When a dog came by he would jump at them. I would correct him at that time. After the first hour he stopped that problem. I had him set beside me all the time.
I do have a question, there were times when Bear would chomp and chomp (sound). There were no dog close. By the way, a wild life movie maker was filming the group while we were training. I plan on doing this till Bear shows no sign of wanting to engage anouther dog. At time he want to play with some dogs. When they would launch a bird he was like a real bird do, watching were it landed and the go signal. Good luck to all Jim and Bear |

Bear and I spent a day at the beach (Gulf of Mexico). The day was great. The weather was a cool 91degrees and the water temp was 79degrees. Waves were about 4feet. Bear had never been in salt water, he was surprized. At first he would run at the out going wave, then when it came in, he ran the other way. It wasnt long before he was swiming out a good distamce. I would throw the dummy out a ways and he would charge the water. He was good at returning the dummy to hand.
When we got home I gave a bath to Bear and myself, looked back on the day and it was a joy. Keep up the good work Jim Schaefer |

Bear and I have been working on every thing. We are getting ready for whitewing dove season (sept) We ran out of pigeons. I am trying to get some more. In Nov Bear and I will be going to South Dakota, to hunt pheasent, Grouse, Partrige and maybe quail. Here in south Tx we are the quail captiol of the US. Still dont know why I signed up for quail. The place is about 1500 miles one way. For 250US a day and 50 for lodgeing. They have guide/dogs and process birds.
Cant waite to see what Bear is going to do. Jim and Bear |
