I have a 14 week old Labrador puppy who has lived in the kitchen of our house up till now. I have installed a kennel and run in the garden and I am trying to get him used to it. I feed him in it and have put some dog toys in with him and have been leaving him for short periods at first and now I am increasing the time, he is still sleeping the kitchen at night. He whines terribly for about 25 minutes when left but I don't go back to him until he has stopped. Is there anything else I should be doing to ease the transition?

How near your next door neighbour is and that sort of thing. Your post suggests you go to the dog once it has stopped whining. Don't. Leave it there until you want to go and get it. The sooner you break the sleeping in the house protocol the better.

Posts: 7 (16 July, 2008 18:42:22) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Fergus I have also recently moved my dogs from house to kennel and have been surprised by the way they have adapted to the transition. It is a bit easier for me as there is two of them and generally they are happy as long as they are together. However, i have made one observation that appears to calm the dogs. I have a kennel with a sheltered compartment and guillotine door. During the day the dogs are free to go from this area to the run as they please. At night they are shut away and dont have the freedom to move around the run. I have found that this makes for a quiet nights sleep from the pair of them. Also whenever i put them in the kennel after exercise i say the words " in your kennel" and make a fuss of them. Hope some of this helps.
