I read the test description. I am curious to know at what level the dog is required to actually point a bird?

Hi Alec
I am curious to know at what level the dog is required to actually point a bird? That will be up to our panel of experts. There are six grades in all. Grade one is aimed at the puppy just beginning formal training and the final grade is approximately equivalent to the UK open working test standard. The scheme is essentially a 'training scheme' and the lower three grades are predominantly basic obedience, with an introduction to field skills. The upper three grades test fieldwork and natural ability under increasingly challenging conditions. Pippa

Thank you, Pippa. I am a field trialer and hunter in North America and would like to know more about field trials for pointing dogs in the UK.

Hi Alec
Our Field Trials are run by the Kennel Club and are highly competitive. We (the Gundog Club) are a new and separate organisation - our scheme with its field 'tests' has more in common with the US hunt test system as we test each dog against a standard rather than against each other. Des will be able to give you information on our pointer/setter Field Trials - he has an interesting diary here http://gundogandbirddogforums.yuku.com/topic/1845 Pippa
