Well just setting here waiting for the big blow, Molly. Just off the coast about 130 miles out in the gulf. The cats are not to be found and both dogs in the house with us. The lab pup is pacing the floor like something is going to happen?? The storm is to be a level 1 or maybe 2. At this time nobody knows. It is to take 12 to 19 hours to pass over the area. Mostly rain with wind. Well post results tomorrow.

The late Jack Nash of Moanruad fame maintained that if you had a setter and a pointer in front of you the setter would be gazing lovingly into your eyes while the pointer would be looking round you saying to himself " Look at those big hills.". This picture sort of bears it out. Don't you think?

.......that working tests are a good thing or a bad thing?

My own view is that the Working Test has probably done more for the handlers than it has for the dogs.

Dangerous Toy Alert

Can I just alert people's attention to a dangerous toy on the market bought at
Crufts by my friend who has one of my pups. The toy is called a Busy Buddy made
by Premier. It is a Kong type toy, dumbbell in shape of hard rubber with holes
in either end of the dumbbell to put treats etc. into. Well my friend gave this
toy to her 7 month old pup with treats in, and after five minutes saw him

dummy launcher

I've been given a dummy launcher with the centre spigot missing(the piece that locates the dummy), does anyone know were i can get a replacement spigot or send the launcher to be repaired .I've been in contact with the manufacturer "Turner & Richards " but they dont supply the part i need as a replacement.

I was totally unbelieving when Eddie, the Springer, allegedly detected weeks-old blood that had been scrubbed off, in the McCann case in Portugal.

I find it almost as unbelievable that the same dog is now supposedly detecting long-dead (back to the 1940s, possibly) bodies in Jersey.

I know Spaniels are good, but are they really that good? Has anyone got inside information on how these dogs are trained (and maintain their training)?

Black v. liver

Eric,
I think the liver dogs are definitely more skittish. I have a friend who has 2 chocolate labs and he says they have been harder than his yellow and black labs - but not as bad as his springer!

Although I think the liver dogs are treated differently by their owners too. No idea why - maybe they seem more vulnerable because they are liver!
I have a friend with a yellow flatcoat (rescued from the bucket!) who is a brilliant worker!

Radio 4 and the Shoot

Did anyone hear the programme on Sunday morning? The presenter was out on a shoot in Norfolk. It was really good. Were any of you on the shoot they featured? What was particularly touching (for a non shooting townie like me) was the passion the guns had for the game they shot - it being for the table. One of the party supplied birds to his Dad's butchers in the village. It was so good to hear shooting in a positive light. All the more so, given the horrendous scenes of chicken farming in...

Hunters Beware - The Devil's In The Details

The latest version of Oklahoma legislation regulating kennels and dog breeding contains some language that would seem to mean that hunting would disqualify a person from having a kennel license.

The legislation says the state may deny, refuse to renew or revoke a kennel license if the kennel owner has any association with "blood sports."

What are "blood sports?"

Certainly, participation in something like dog fighting or @#%$ fighting would fit this...
